If you want to train in Pacific Beach, the directory lists more than thirty places, and they sort into a few groups: gyms with open access, small-group studios, private spaces for one-on-one work, and Pilates, yoga and barre rooms. Many are on or near Garnet Avenue, so you can look at a few of them in one afternoon before you commit to any.
The quickest way to choose is to decide how you want to be coached. Want a place you can walk into and lift on your own schedule? Start with the gyms. Want someone to plan the session for you? Look at the small-group studios and the trainers. Want a quiet room and an appointment? Look at the private spaces. The Pacific Beach page lists everything in the directory for the neighborhood.
Gyms with open access
- PB Fitness is a few blocks from the shoreline. It offers open gym access and personal training, plus PBFit+, a coach-led 50-minute small-group program. The space includes three rooftop decks.
- Ocean Pacific Gym and Wellness is a 30,000-square-foot beachfront gym with a rooftop outdoor gym and more than 60 weekly classes, from yoga and Pilates to boxing and jiu-jitsu. Its listing also mentions saunas, steam rooms, a salt room and a cold plunge.
- Neighborhood Gym is a limited-capacity gym on Cass Street. Membership is capped and members reserve sessions through an app, so there is no front desk and no waiting for equipment. It has a half rack, Olympic barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells and an air bike.
- Glute Lab is a strength and physique gym built around small-group coaching, with sessions for people from beginners to athletes.
If you want to compare these with gyms elsewhere in the county, the strength gyms page is the place to look.
Small-group studios
Small-group training sits between a gym and a private trainer: you get a plan and a coach, and you train alongside a few other people.
- Voltage Fitness is a coach-led studio on Garnet Avenue. Its core offering is a 45-minute HIIT class that combines strength, cardio and core work, and it also does personal training and online coaching.
- The Movement Warehouse has an outdoor training floor and runs small-group HIIT and strength classes that rotate through glutes and hamstrings, back and biceps, core, legs and shoulders, and full-body days. It also lists one-on-one training and a golf-performance program.
- Brazilian Glute Club is a boutique studio whose classes use ankle weights, trampolines and step-based workouts.
- On One Run Club is a community run club with weekly group runs and meetups, including Saturday gatherings at Oasis. It is the one to try if you would rather run with people than lift.
More group options across the county are on the group fitness page.
Private training spaces and one-on-one trainers
Pacific Beach has many independent trainers in the directory, and several work from shared or private facilities.
- MB Performance SD is a private facility of roughly 3,000 square feet that serves independent trainers and their clients. FFIT runs sessions from it on Garnet Avenue, offering one-on-one and semi-private two-on-one training, with weekday starts at 5:45 a.m.
- Train With Sturm is a private, appointment-only gym on Garnet Avenue. Clients start with a movement assessment, and the options include one-on-one, partner and online training.
- San Diego Fit trains clients on Garnet Avenue and in their homes around Pacific Beach, La Jolla and Clairemont, and also lists boxing and online coaching.
- Monster Longe offers individual and group training, program design and online coaching, with weekday hours that start as early as 4 a.m.
- Rob Wood Fitness offers personal training and nutrition coaching, and is associated with a strength program for Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners.
- Team Anderson Fitness, Strive Elite Fitness and XTR Training all list competition or contest preparation for physique athletes alongside regular lifestyle training.
If your schedule is the problem, GDO FIT is mobile. It brings equipment to homes, parks and the beach, and it hosts a weekly Saturday group workout at PB Shore Club, which is an easy way to meet the coach before booking anything. SD Master Trainer also trains outdoors, with sessions listed at Pacific Beach, Mission Trails and Cowles Mountain. For trainers in other parts of the county, see the personal trainers page.
Pilates, yoga and barre in Pacific Beach
The neighborhood also has many studios for movement classes. Each has a different format, so read the listing before you book.
- Avanti Pilates offers private, duet, semi-private, circuit and virtual group sessions on CoreAlign and Oov equipment.
- Om Spot has an equipment room with reformers, trapeze tables, barrels and chairs, alongside mat Pilates and yoga.
- Powerhouse Pilates - Pacific Beach runs classes seven days a week for newcomers and experienced clients.
- Lagree Lounge runs 45-minute Megaformer classes in small groups on Garnet Avenue, with modifications for beginners.
- SESH Studio pairs Pilates on Xformer machines with strength-based movement, and has an ice bath and a steam room and sauna.
- Spirit Barre Studios teaches barre and mat Pilates, including hot barre and virtual options.
- Reach Yoga is an infrared-heated yoga studio, open since 2012, with Vinyasa, Yin and Yoga Sculpt classes.
- Sōma Yoga Studio has Vinyasa, heated Power Flow and restorative classes, and welcomes beginners.
- Ritual Wellness Collective offers yoga, breathwork and meditation, with group classes and private sessions.
How to pick one
- Visit at the time you would actually train. A rooftop gym at 6 a.m. and at 5 p.m. are different places.
- Ask what the first session involves. Some places start with an assessment, some with a trial class.
- Ask what is included. Whether a gym's recovery rooms or a studio's extra services come with your plan is a question to ask directly, not assume.
- Ask what it costs and how you cancel. Prices are not in the directory, so ask each place.
