If you want Olympic weightlifting or powerlifting in San Diego County, start by deciding which sport you mean, because the gyms are built differently. Olympic weightlifting is the snatch and the clean and jerk, two lifts that reward technique and need a platform and a coach who can watch your bar path. Powerlifting is the squat, bench press and deadlift, and it needs sturdy racks, calibrated plates and room to load a bar heavy.
Once you know which one you are after, the choice is mostly about three things: whether you want a gym that only does barbell sport, a CrossFit box that teaches the lifts alongside other work, or a trainer who coaches you one on one. The listings below say which is which. For everything else, the strength gyms page lists the full set.
Gyms built around Olympic weightlifting
A few places in the county are weightlifting gyms first.
- The Strength Tank in San Diego takes complete beginners through national-level competitors. It runs daily coached sessions, open gym and a beginner course on the snatch and the clean and jerk, and its listing says it has 14 lifting platforms. The owners also host the USA Weightlifting-sanctioned Finest City Open.
- West Coast Weightlifting in Santee coaches youth and high-school athletes, recreational lifters, masters competitors and advanced lifters. Coaching covers technique, competition preparation and virtual training, and the facility has powerlifting equipment and 24-hour access.
- Locomotion Athletics in San Diego offers Olympic weightlifting and CrossFit-style training, with personal coaching and group classes capped at sixteen people.
- Pinnacle Performance Gym is a small gym on Morena Boulevard that offers Olympic weightlifting, functional fitness and one-on-one coaching.
Gyms built around powerlifting
Powerlifting gyms tend to be private, open all hours and light on frills. You bring your own plan, or you pay for coaching on top.
- Convoy Strength is a private 24-hour gym in the Convoy area of Kearny Mesa with competition-grade racks, Olympic platforms and specialty bars. It was the listed venue for a Powerlifting America meet in July 2026.
- STS Performance is a powerlifting-focused gym on Armour Street, also in Kearny Mesa, with personal coaching and form instruction for beginners and experienced lifters. It has hosted powerlifting meets at the facility.
- Simply Gainz Gym is a semi-private gym with 24-hour keyless access, calibrated plates, deadlift platforms and chalk. It offers day passes, which makes it an easy place to try before you commit.
- GEGNS Gym is open around the clock for powerlifters, strongman competitors and weightlifters, and keeps atlas stones, yokes, logs and axle bars on the floor. It hosts the San Diego's Strongest series.
- Strength Collective in Santee is a veteran-owned 24/7 gym that focuses on powerlifting, strongman and Olympic weightlifting, with a coached floor. Tours can be booked through its website.
North County options
You do not have to drive to the city. The Vista gym North County Fitness & Performance programs powerlifting, Olympic lifting and HYROX, opens at 4 a.m. on weekdays and has a sauna for members. Elite1 Training, also in Vista, offers powerlifting and individualized coaching for athletes and general clients.
In Oceanside, The Oceanside Gym is a bodybuilding and powerlifting gym downtown, with personal training and small-group strength classes. If you would rather lift with a coach than join a gym, Devin Sharp trains clients across San Marcos, Carlsbad, Escondido and Oceanside and has coached competitive powerlifters.
Learning the lifts at a CrossFit gym or small studio
Many CrossFit gyms teach the Olympic lifts as part of a wider program, which suits you if you want company and a class schedule more than a lifting-only room.
- CrossFit Unsung in Poway runs monthly Olympic weightlifting clinics on the snatch and the clean and jerk.
- MVMNT Collective in San Marcos has a Sunday morning Olympic weightlifting class.
- CrossFit FLxR in Carlsbad pairs Olympic weightlifting with CrossFit and HYROX, and describes itself as beginner-friendly.
- The Experience Fitness & Mobility Studio in Hillcrest teaches the snatch, the clean and jerk and the powerlifting lifts in one barbell class.
One-on-one powerlifting coaches
If a gym floor feels like too much, a personal trainer can write your program and watch your lifts. Pearl Power Fitness centers on powerlifting and general strength, with private, semi-private, group and online options. Iron Rhino Fitness in Carmel Valley offers one-on-one and semi-private training that includes powerlifting, starting with an initial evaluation session.
How to choose
- Pick your sport first. A gym that is great for deadlifts may have no platforms for snatches, and the reverse.
- Ask about a first session. Some gyms run a beginner course or sell day passes. Ask what a first visit looks like and what it costs.
- Check the hours. Several of these gyms are open 24 hours, but coaching is only there at set times.
- Think about the drive. You will be there several days a week, so a gym close to home usually beats a perfect one across the county.
