If you want an outdoor workout in San Diego, the quickest answer is to pick the park first and the trainer second. Several directory listings name the exact park they use, so you can choose a class you can walk or bike to, then check the days and times with the trainer. The groups below are sorted by what you are signing up for: a boot camp, a one-on-one session in a park, or an outdoor yoga class.
The directory lists outdoor options in North Park, Mission Valley, Mission Hills, Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas and around the city. Some meet on grass, some on the sand, and a few run both an indoor studio and an outdoor session. Each name below links to its listing, and the lines about each one come from that listing.
Outdoor boot camps and group workouts
A boot camp is a group workout that meets in a public space and is led by a trainer. These are the ones the directory lists.
- Groundwork Bootcamp meets in North Park at Morley Field, near Upas and Louisiana Streets, on open grass with weights. The listing gives weekday evening sessions starting at 5:30 p.m. and says all fitness levels are welcome. You sign up by direct message, text or email through its Instagram account.
- Jo's Bootcamp runs group sessions at Bird Park in North Park, near 28th and Thorn. The workouts use low weights, high repetitions and high intensity, and the business also offers personal training, online coaching and adaptive sessions.
- Gut Check Fitness offers boot camps at Torrey Hills and Sage Canyon Park, plus trail running and calisthenics. It also hosts endurance events such as The Suck and the King of the Hill Trail Running Series.
- Brian White Fitness runs outdoor boot camps in Balboa Park, along with Dirty30, a 30-minute express workout for tight schedules.
- Bootique Fitness is women-focused and runs 45-minute outdoor classes at Civita Park in Mission Valley and at La Jolla Park, with online and on-demand sessions as well.
- Mission: FIT holds classes of about four to eight people, either at its Fort Stockton Drive studio in Mission Hills or outdoors at nearby Pioneer Park.
If you want an outdoor class close to home in the City of San Diego, start with the North Park pair. Both are in the same neighborhood, so you can try each on a different evening. The North Park page shows what else is in the neighborhood.
One-on-one training outdoors
Sometimes you want a trainer's full attention but not a gym. These listings describe private or small-group sessions held outside.
- Hillcrest Kettlebells teaches kettlebell work and nothing else. Clients choose 45-minute private sessions held outdoors, or sessions over Zoom, and weekend times are listed for booking.
- Body By Dave Fitness is a mobile and online business. Sessions can be one-on-one, partner or small group, held at your home or workplace, outdoors at Kate Sessions Park, or online.
- SD Master Trainer coaches calisthenics, bodybuilding and football footwork and agility at outdoor locations including Mission Trails, Pacific Beach and Cowles Mountain.
- Russian Personal Trainer is a mobile private service in North County. Sessions take place at home, outdoors or in a private gym with equipment provided.
The useful question for any of these is where the session meets, since a trainer who covers a wide area may offer a park near you that is not on the listing. Ask before you book. You can browse more of them on the San Diego personal trainers page.
Beach and park classes in North County Coastal
North County has the most beach-side options. Cameron Fitness in downtown Oceanside runs the original Oceanside Beach Bootcamp near the pier. Its 60-minute sessions are held either on the beach or at the upstairs studio, so you can switch to indoors when you prefer. The classes suit beginners through advanced clients.
For a slower pace, three yoga listings meet outside:
- Pier View Yoga holds outdoor classes at Tyson Street Park in Oceanside, across from the sand. All-level flow classes meet on weekday mornings with modifications offered.
- Yoga In Beautiful Places runs beach yoga and stand-up paddleboard yoga along the coast, with sessions in Carlsbad, Encinitas and Sunset Cliffs.
- Shanti Kitti Yoga is a studio on Garrison Street in Oceanside whose outdoor classes meet at Buddy Todd Park.
In Carmel Valley, Yoga Gal is a program for adults over 40 that holds classes outdoors at Carmel Creek Park, at local recreation centers and online. Beginners are welcome.
What to ask before your first outdoor session
Outdoor classes depend on weather, light and shared space, so a few questions up front save a wasted trip.
- Where exactly does the group meet, and where do you park? Parks are big, and a listing may name only the park.
- What happens on a day with rain or poor air? Some trainers, like Cameron Fitness, have a studio to fall back on. Ask others how they handle it.
- What do you bring? Ask whether equipment is provided or whether you need a mat, weights or a water bottle.
- Can you try one session first? Ask the trainer whether a first visit is possible.
- Is the schedule fixed? Times in a listing can change, so confirm the current days directly.
Where to look next
The group fitness page lists the classes and studios in the directory, and the pilates, yoga and barre page covers the outdoor yoga listings in more detail. For a single area, try the Oceanside page or the Carlsbad page. If you would rather train indoors on days the weather turns, the Pacific Beach guide lists gyms with rooftop and outdoor floors.
