If you want to train in Kearny Mesa, the short version is this: the Convoy District and the industrial blocks around it hold some of the city's most serious strength gyms, several martial arts schools, a cluster of reformer Pilates studios and a handful of one-on-one trainers. It is a central spot, so it suits anyone who lives in Clairemont, Mission Valley, Serra Mesa or Mira Mesa and doesn't want to cross town.
Most of these places sit in business parks and strip-mall units rather than on a beach strip, which means easy parking and few crowds. The Kearny Mesa directory page lists everyone in the area. Below, they are sorted by what you want to do when you walk in.
Strength gyms in Kearny Mesa
This is the area's strongest suit, and the gyms differ in useful ways.
- Convoy Strength is a private, 24-hour gym in the Convoy area set up for powerlifting, Olympic lifting, bodybuilding and general strength training. Its listing mentions competition-grade racks, Olympic platforms and specialty bars.
- STS Performance is a powerlifting-focused gym on Armour Street with personal coaching and form instruction for beginners and experienced lifters. Annual members can qualify for 24-hour access, and the gym has hosted powerlifting meets.
- House of Strength is a strength-training gym and wellness center on Convoy Street. Its listing says public information about its programming is limited, so check its website for current offerings before you go.
If you are deciding between an open-access gym and a coached one, our post on strength gyms in San Diego explains how to tell them apart, and the strength gyms page for San Diego lists the rest.
CrossFit and HYROX
CrossFit 1904 is the area's CrossFit gym. Its programming includes CrossFit, weightlifting and adaptive classes, and it is the home of the 1904 Barbell Club. Its listing says it recently added a 5:45 p.m. class, which helps if you finish work late. The CrossFit and HYROX page covers other affiliates across the county.
Muay Thai, boxing and jiu-jitsu
Three schools here teach different things, so the choice comes down to what you want to learn.
- King Tiger Muay Thai teaches traditional Muay Thai to beginners, adults, children and aspiring competitors. Classes run from fundamentals to fight application, with private lessons, kids classes and a Saturday open gym.
- Odyssey Training Center is a family-owned gym of about 13,000 square feet covering boxing, Muay Thai and jiu-jitsu, plus strength and performance training, HYROX sessions, open gym time and a recovery area. A kids program runs beside the adult schedule, and a free first class is offered.
- Rasai Jiu Jitsu is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu school with beginner-friendly classes for kids and adults, no prior experience needed. A free trial is available through its website.
If you are brand new to combat sports, our guide to boxing gyms in San Diego for beginners walks through what a first class looks like. The boxing and martial arts page has the full list.
Reformer Pilates studios
Kearny Mesa has three reformer Pilates studios worth comparing:
- HONOR Pilates Kearny Mesa is on Convoy Court. Its signature Power Pilates blends reformer work with a Lagree machine, and group classes suit beginners through experienced clients from early morning to evening.
- Corecraft Pilates is on Balboa Avenue and teaches small-group, semi-private and private reformer Pilates, with classes capped at four people. It also offers TRX and virtual mat classes over Zoom.
- The Burns Collective is a Christian mat and reformer Pilates studio that opened in spring 2026 and blends exercise with fellowship and worship.
For more studios across the county, see our reformer Pilates guide and the Pilates, yoga and barre page.
One-on-one personal trainers
If you want a coach to yourself, three independent businesses list Kearny Mesa as home:
- The Fit Lab is a personal training and fitness-testing studio built around a data-driven program that uses measurements to guide each client's plan. New clients can start with a consultation booked through its website.
- JG Fitness is run by strength and conditioning coach Joseph Griffin on Ronson Road, with a specialty in handstands and calisthenics. Prospective clients apply through an online form.
- Fitness with Fuka offers online and in-person training led by a former professional athlete who coaches women over 25. Clients apply through an online form.
Black Sheep is a different kind of option: a San Diego fitness network that matches clients with independent trainers, yoga instructors and nutrition coaches, with listed trainers working in Kearny Mesa and several other neighborhoods. Our post on how to choose a personal trainer covers what to ask in a first conversation, and the personal trainers page lists more.
A spa stop on Convoy Street
Aqua Day Spa is a traditional Korean day spa on Convoy Street. Its listing describes body scrubs, red-clay rooms, a hot jacuzzi and a cold pool, and says it operates as a walk-in business. It is not a gym, but it is one more thing to know about if you are already in the neighborhood. The recovery and cold plunge page lists other options.
How to choose
Start with what you want to do. For heavy barbell work, look at Convoy Strength or STS Performance. For a class with a group, CrossFit 1904 or a Pilates studio. For a skill, one of the martial arts schools.
Then check the schedule. Convoy Strength lists 24-hour access, STS Performance offers it to annual members, and CrossFit 1904 has an evening class, so early and late workers have choices. Finally, try before you commit. Odyssey Training Center and Rasai Jiu Jitsu both mention a free first class or trial, and it is fair to ask any studio what a membership or package costs and what it includes.
