If you want to train in North Park, Hillcrest or Normal Heights, the directory lists more than thirty places across the three neighborhoods, and the useful way to sort them is by how you like to be coached: private one-on-one studios, small-group gyms, classes, or outdoor sessions. The three areas sit within a few minutes of each other, so you can tour a gym in each on the same afternoon.
North Park has the most variety, with boxing, outdoor bootcamps and strength gyms along El Cajon Boulevard. Hillcrest leans toward private personal-training studios and Pilates. Normal Heights is smaller, with a new strength gym on Adams Avenue and a cluster of yoga studios. The neighborhood pages for North Park, Hillcrest and Normal Heights list everything in each area.

Outdoor sessions

How to choose
Start with the schedule. If you need a 5 a.m. slot, look at San Diego Strength Club, Hawk Fitness or The Anvil. If you want to train on your own time, Prime Fitness, Coach B's and RESET list 24-hour access. If you would rather not be in a gym at all, try an outdoor session first. Most places let you ask questions before you book, so visit two or three and ask what a first week looks like.
