Small-group personal training sits between a one-on-one session and a class: a handful of people share a coach's time in a studio. In San Diego County the label covers a lot of ground, from two clients training side by side to groups of ten, so the useful question is how many people share each coach and how the session is run.
This guide explains how small-group training works, what the listings in the directory say about group size, and which studios offer it by area. For every option, browse the full personal trainers and group fitness pages.
What small-group training usually looks like
Three formats come up most often in listings:
- Partner or "two-on-one" sessions: you and one other person train together with a coach. FFIT in Pacific Beach lists semi-private two-on-one training alongside one-on-one sessions.
- Semi-private: a few people in the room, each on a program written for them. Earned Fitness SD, off Mission Gorge Road, lists roughly four members per coach.
- Small-group classes: everyone follows the same session, with a cap on the headcount. Body University in La Mesa lists one-hour small-group weight training capped at roughly six to ten people.
Ask three things before you book: how many people share a coach, whether everyone does the same workout or a personal one, and whether you can try a session first.

How to pick one
- Match the format to how you like to train. If you want a program written for you, look for semi-private. If you want company and a set session, look for a capped class.
- Check the group size on the schedule, not just in the marketing. A "small group" of four and one of ten feel different.
- Book a trial or consultation where one is offered, and watch who else is in the room.
- Consider the drive. A studio you can reach in ten minutes gets used more than a better-sounding one across the county.
