If you want to learn Muay Thai or kickboxing in San Diego County, you have more choice than you might expect: the directory lists more than twenty gyms that teach one or both, from Carlsbad down to National City. The quickest way to narrow them is to decide whether you want a gym that teaches only striking or one that also runs jiu-jitsu and MMA, and whether you want to spar at all.
The two arts overlap, and plenty of gyms teach both. Muay Thai is the Thai style that uses punches, kicks, elbows and knees plus clinch work, where you hold and control an opponent at close range. Kickboxing classes usually keep to punches and kicks. At most gyms the class format is the same either way: warm-up, technique, pad or bag work, then conditioning. You can browse every gym of this kind on the boxing and martial arts page.
How to choose between them
Read the class descriptions before you go. A few things separate one gym from the next:
- Beginner path. Some gyms start new students in private lessons first, others put you straight into an all-levels class. 8Tribe Muay Thai offers a private Beginner Program of eight 45-minute sessions before you join weekday evening group classes.
- Sparring. Ask whether it is optional and when it happens. Tewa Muay Thai runs a Tuesday class that covers drilling and an introduction to sparring, and Elite Kickboxing Gym lists optional sparring and clinch work.
- Mixed or striking only. A gym that also teaches jiu-jitsu gives you somewhere to go next. A Muay Thai specialist gives you more striking classes per week.
- Trial class. Many of these gyms offer one. Ask whether it is free and whether you need your own gloves or wraps.
- Kids and family. Several run youth classes, which matters if you want to train on the same evening as your child.
North County Coastal: Carlsbad and Oceanside
Carlsbad Kickboxing Club teaches Muay Thai at two levels, kickboxing, boxing and self-defense, including a Power Boxing bag class, with youth Muay Thai and personal training as well. 360 Combat and Recovery offers Muay Thai, boxing and Capoeira, and its listing mentions pad work, drills, clinching and technical sparring. See more on the Carlsbad boxing and martial arts page.
In Oceanside, Extreme Power Gym describes itself as the city's only traditional Muay Thai kickboxing school, and it also trains USA amateur boxing. The Oceanside page lists the other martial arts gyms there.
North County Inland: Vista and Escondido
Elite Kickboxing Gym in Vista is a Muay Thai gym with fundamentals, all-levels sessions, 45-minute bag conditioning, fight-team training and youth classes for ages 5 to 12. A women's class meets Thursday mornings, with all-women sparring monthly.
Escondido has three quite different options. Escondido Combat Academy teaches no-gi jiu-jitsu, boxing, Muay Thai and MMA, and welcomes complete beginners. North County Compound has round-the-clock access for members and one all-access membership across Muay Thai, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, wrestling and more, with a sauna and showers included. Hakan Yildiz Personal Training is a private studio for one-on-one and group Muay Thai, boxing and kickboxing. The full list is on the Escondido page.

Before you go
Pick two gyms within a reasonable drive of where you live or work, since you will only keep going to one you can reach easily. Check the schedule for a beginner or all-levels class at a time you can make, ask what to bring, and ask what the trial class involves. Then go and see how the coaches handle new people.
If you are still deciding between striking styles, our guide to boxing gyms for beginners covers what a first class looks like. For more training options in your area, start with the City of San Diego page.
