If you want to train in La Mesa or El Cajon, the short version is this: La Mesa leans toward private training studios and CrossFit boxes, while El Cajon has more martial arts gyms and coached group classes, and the two are a short drive apart. Pick the town closest to home or work, then decide whether you want a coach to yourself, a small group, or a class.
Both towns sit in East County, away from the coastal crowds, and both have a mix of independent trainers and gyms that the La Mesa directory page and the El Cajon directory page list in full. What follows is a way to sort them by how you like to train.
Private studios and one-on-one trainers in La Mesa
La Mesa has the deepest bench of personal trainers in this part of the county. A few differ in useful ways:
- Iron Girl Personal Training is a private studio of about 1,000 square feet on La Mesa Boulevard, owned by Amber Nirelli since 2008. Sessions run 30 or 60 minutes, with small-group options and an initial consultation.
- Werk Fitness La Mesa is a private 5,000-square-foot facility where independent trainers see their clients, open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Two trainers who work there have their own listings: PHYZEKE Fitness for strength and general conditioning, and Grateful Strength & Wellness, which also trains clients in Bay Park and Ocean Beach.
- Ageless Strength & Fitness works with adults 35 and older, using kettlebells and beginner weightlifting, with one-on-one, semi-private and group sessions.
- Profectus Health & Fitness is a private studio serving mainly women over 35, with semi-private and small-group strength training.
- Body University runs one-hour small-group weight training capped at roughly six to ten people, mainly for women, plus private and online training.
- Effective Fitness in the La Mesa hills starts new clients with a consultation and movement assessment, then offers personal and group training.
If you would rather not go to a gym at all, Violante Personal Training is a mobile service based around La Mesa, and Workout With Kirk works mainly with adults from about 40 up, with mobile visits by appointment. No Bounds Fitness needs no gym membership.
Strength gyms and CrossFit in La Mesa
For a regular gym with coached workouts, Stallion Arena Fitness on La Mesa Boulevard offers memberships, one-on-one and partner training, and coached group workouts, with a second location in El Cajon.
CrossFit has two options here. CrossFit La Mesa is on Avocado Boulevard and hosts a free community class on Sundays at 10 a.m., which is an easy way to try a workout before committing. CrossFit Kivnon offers a Saturday beginner class, Olympic weightlifting, and says it became an official HYROX Training Club in August 2026. For more on choosing between boxes, see the CrossFit and HYROX page.
Coached classes and strength gyms in El Cajon
El Cajon's gyms lean toward group coaching:
- Latitude 32 Fitness on Fletcher Parkway runs structured coached workouts, with classes as early as 5 a.m. and Saturday morning sessions.
- San Diego Elite Training caps one-hour classes at 15 people and books through Mindbody, with trainers giving individual attention inside the group.
- CrossFit Flashbang opened in 2019 in a roughly 9,300-square-foot facility, so there is plenty of floor space.
- The Gym El Cajon in Parkway Plaza is bodybuilding-oriented, opens at 4 a.m. on weekdays and welcomes independent trainers. Dani Younan Personal Training trains clients there.
- HQ Athletics is a trainer-only gym, so it is for trainers and their one-on-one clients rather than the public.
Women who want a private setting can look at Haven Fit and MK Fitness, both in Rancho San Diego near El Cajon and both offering private and semi-private sessions.
Boxing, Muay Thai and martial arts in El Cajon
El Cajon is where East County's combat gyms cluster, and most offer a way to start without committing:
- Bomber Squad Academy teaches boxing and Muay Thai, and newcomers can book a free trial class.
- Switch Fitness San Diego covers Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, boxing and MMA, with a free first class and separate kids' classes.
- Bloodlines Boxing & Wrestling lists adult boxing at 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. and all-level wrestling in the evening.
- Combat Sports Center is a family-oriented school with a belt system and general and women's adult classes.
The full list is on the El Cajon boxing and martial arts page.
How to choose between the two towns
Start with the schedule. If you need a 5 a.m. slot, both Werk Fitness in La Mesa and Latitude 32 Fitness in El Cajon list it. If you work odd hours, a mobile or by-appointment trainer removes the commute entirely.
Then think about how you like to be coached. A studio such as Iron Girl or Profectus gives you privacy and few people on the floor. A class gym such as San Diego Elite Training gives you a crowd and a set plan. A martial arts gym gives you a skill to learn rather than a workout to follow.
Finally, visit before you sign anything. Several of the places above offer a free class, a community session or a consultation, and it is fair to ask any of them what a membership or package costs and what is included.
