If your kid plays a sport and you are looking at youth sports performance training in San Diego County, the first thing to sort out is what kind of place you want. Some facilities are built around one sport, some train every age from middle school to the pros, and some are small private studios where a coach works with a handful of athletes at a time. All of them are in the directory, and the listings below say which is which.
The short version: look for a coach who starts with an assessment, keeps groups small enough that someone is watching your athlete's technique, and is clear about which ages they work with. Then visit once and watch a session before you commit to anything.
What sports performance training is
Sports performance training is coached work on the physical side of a sport: strength, speed, agility, jumping and conditioning. It sits next to team practice, not in place of it. A baseball player might do semi-private sessions built around their sport, while a soccer or football player might focus on sprint mechanics and strength in the weight room.
For younger athletes, the useful questions are practical ones:
- Does the facility list youth athletes specifically, or only adults and pros?
- Is there an assessment or testing at the start?
- How many athletes does one coach work with in a session?
- Is the training built around one sport, or around general athletic skills?
- Can a parent watch a session or ask for a trial?
Our guide to choosing a personal trainer in San Diego has more questions you can adapt for a young athlete. For gyms that train with coaches rather than open access, see the strength gyms type page.
City of San Diego

- Proteus Athlete is a family-owned sport-performance center working with youth, high-school, competitive and professional athletes as well as teams. It also runs a year-round rugby academy on a 20,000-square-foot outdoor training facility.
- Catalyst Performance Center is inside Barnes Tennis Center in Point Loma. It serves youth and adult clients and offers personal and small-group training and sports-performance evaluations, with an indoor gym and an outdoor turf zone.

North County
On the coast, Joe Dell Training in Encinitas works with middle-school, high-school, college and professional athletes. Its summer athlete training pairs outdoor speed and agility work with indoor strength sessions. In Oceanside, Perseverance Training offers private, semi-private, small-group and team training for athletes from youth to collegiate level, and is known for softball, with pitching, hitting, fielding and catching coaching and cage rental. Oceanside has more options on its strength gyms page, and Encinitas on the personal trainers page.
Inland, Driven Sports Performance in San Marcos is built around baseball players. Every athlete starts with an assessment, and training runs in semi-private groups with testing and follow-up testing. If your athlete plays baseball or softball, a sport-specific place like this one or Perseverance is worth a look next to the general facilities.
In Poway, CrossFit Unsung runs CrossFit Kids and teen classes, and in Escondido, North County Compound lists kids classes among its martial arts and strength offerings. Those are a different route: general athletic work in a class setting rather than one-on-one performance coaching.
East County and South Bay
In East County, West Coast Weightlifting in Santee is an Olympic weightlifting gym serving youth and high-school athletes alongside recreational and masters lifters. Its coaching covers technique and competition preparation. RSD Boxing in Spring Valley offers kids and teens boxing for ages 6 to 17. Out in Ramona, ADMA Elite Training adapts its functional training for everyday clients and athletes, and its owner started the ADMA Youth Alliance, a nonprofit that funds scholarships, sports equipment and mentorship for Ramona kids.
In the South Bay, GreenSpeed Training Facility in Eastlake, Chula Vista, is a limited-membership gym offering speed and sports performance coaching, private training, small-group sessions and youth training for athletes, kids and adults. Coronado Fitness Club in Coronado offers sports-performance training and training for young athletes alongside open-gym access.
How to compare them
Pick two or three that are a reasonable drive from school and practice, since a session that is hard to reach does not last. Ask each one what a first session looks like, how old the youngest athletes are, and what the athlete would do on a typical day. Ask what everything costs before you sign up, because the listings do not say.
If your athlete is younger and wants something more playful, the martial arts and kids class options above may suit better than a performance facility. For older athletes in a specific sport, a sport-specific coach is often the sharper match.
